Measuring the Virial Temperature of Galactic Halos Through Electron Scattering of Quasar Emission Lines
نویسنده
چکیده
Semi-analytic models of galaxy formation postulate the existence of virialized gaseous halos around galaxies at high redshifts. A small fraction of the light emitted by any high-redshift quasar is therefore expected to scatter off the free electrons in the halo of its host galaxy. The broadening of the scattered emission lines of the quasar can be used to measure the temperature of these electrons. For gas in virial equilibrium, the velocity width of the scattered line profile is larger by a factor of ∼ (mp/me) = 43 than the velocity dispersion of the host galaxy and reaches ∼> 10, 000 km s for the massive galaxies and groups in which bright quasars reside. In these systems, the scattered width exceeds the intrinsic width of the quasar lines and hence can be used to measure the virial temperature of the quasar host. The high degree of polarization of the scattered radiation can help filter out the extended scattered light from the central emission by the quasar and its host galaxy. The signal-to-noise ratio of the spectral broadening can be enhanced by matching the full spectrum of the scattered radiation to a template of the unscattered quasar spectrum. Although the central fuzz around low-redshift quasars is dominated by starlight, the fuzz around high-redshift quasars might be dominated by scattering before galaxies have converted most of their gas reservoirs into stars. Estimating the continuum of quasars using the articial neural networks
A lot of absorption lines are in the bluewards of Lyα emission line of quasar which is well-known as Lyαforest. Most of absorption lines in this forest belong to the Lyα absorption of the neutral hydrogen in the inter-galactic medium (IGM). For high redshift quasars and in the continuum with low and medium resolution, there are no many regions without absorption, so that, the quasar continuum i...
متن کاملA Stellar Feedback Origin for Neutral Hydrogen in High-Redshift Quasar-Mass Halos
Observations of quasar pairs reveal that quasar host halos at z ∼ 2 have large covering fractions of cool dense gas (& 60% for Lyman limit systems within a projected virial radius). Most simulations have so far failed to explain these large observed covering fractions. We analyze a new set of 15 simulated massive halos with explicit stellar feedback from the FIRE project, covering the halo mass...

Using a homogenous sample of 38,208 quasars with a sky coverage of ∼ 4000deg2 drawn from the SDSS Data Release Five quasar catalog, we study the dependence of quasar clustering on luminosity, virial black hole mass, quasar color, and radio loudness. At z < 2.5, quasar clustering depends weakly on luminosity and virial black hole mass, with typical uncertainty levels ∼ 10% for the measured corre...
متن کاملThe Black Hole to Bulge Mass Relation in Active Galactic Nuclei
The masses of the central black holes in Active Galactic Nuclei (AGNs) can be estimated using the broad emission-lines as a probe of the virial mass inside the BLR. Using reverberation mapping to determine the size of the Broad Line Region (BLR) and the width of the variable component of the line profile Hβ line it is possible to find quite accurate virial mass estimates for AGN with adequate d...
